Books & Geekin’
Acequia Booksellers
There is an art, a refinement, to Acequia. It’s about Gary’s life-long affair with books and Marilyn being a book artist. Posing as a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, Acequia is a magic (and seemingly endless) library that specializes in rarities, unknowns and artist’s books.
Addicted to Comics
Bursting at the friggin’ seams. A good place for back-issues and a host of current mainstream titles.
Astro-Zombies
A wonderful, well-lit, medium-sized store specializing in indie titles. Block off at least half an hour if it’s your first time; Astro-Zombies is one of our best sources for collectible toys and action figures, and it’s easy to get sucked in.
Bird Song Used Books
Pay Asa and Morwyn a visit and weep for how many treasures go unnoticed in our city. Then chat them up and cash in on that criminally sweet rate. Admire their tactfully-packed store, encyclopedic knowledge of their inventory, and sweet-as-tea customer service.
Bookworks
If you need a kid-gift, a grown-up-gift, or just want to browse all sorts of cute and cool stuff, Bookworks is your go-to. One of a shrinking breed of independent bookstores, Bookworks has a great selection, including many local authors and books on regional topics.
Charley's 33's & CDs
Pretty good CD selection and great vinyl selection, as well as strangely high quality vintage clothing. Epic LPs and 45s, mostly used, and a decent funk catalog.
Downtown Books
Formerly known as Downtown Books & Beans. Your classic used book store. Pithy witticisms and vintage photos dot the shelves, the walls already sagging with books piled on books piled high.
Gamers Anonymous
Owned/opp’d by native Jon Sakura, it’s exactly what you prayed for in middle school, and clearly what Jon wished for, too. Resell used games, including vintage NES and Sega memorabilia, and stand in awe of Jon’s handle on the gaming industry, particularly the Japanese wing.
Indian Pueblo Cultural Center
Your one-stop portal to the 20 pueblos of New Mexico. Gas station (with tobacco and papers), history, traveling exhibits, work by local artists, a high-end gift shop and wine-your-future-boss-here restaurant all in a huge, recently remodeled (and gorgeous) site.
Lobo Anime & Comics
Manga! Manga! Manga! From She-Ra to Akira, Lobo’s new location in the foothills offers a wide variety of comics, models, toys and anime vids.
Masks y Más
Just saying the name gets us giddy. Bursting with forget-ordinary desirables, Kiko and his skeleton (get it?) crew stock gorgeous Mexican folk art, genuinely clever t-shirts, luchador masks, hand-carved crosses, stickers, and commissions by local artists.
Mecca Music & Books
Just west of Downtown, Mecca is one of Albuquerque’s funkiest shops, boasting a small but highly eclectic collection of cool used books and old records. Push past Rocky’s elitist staff to score some terrific finds.
