Don Mickey Designs

What about DMD can’t be better said by every Guide printed since 2009? Maybe half of the 2012 Election’s printed materials. All those lawn-posts, flyers, buttons, stickers, envelopes and mailings had to come from somewhere, and most of them weren’t furiously run at Sunday midnight on a Laserjet in the back of a candidate’s office. (Ok, ok, Gary Johnson, we’ll lay off.)

Some of the best printers in New Mexico work upstairs, and Don and a very flexible prepress designer fill out the first floor with good tunes. DMD may not always be the cheapest, but their commitment to your satisfaction is first-rate. And in

Sign & Image Factory

Naturally, you need a sign. A sign to hang in your shop’s front window, on the bathroom door, out in the elements. A vinyl sign that sticks quietly to the wall, a wood-post to rumble the mead in Valhalla. Maybe you don’t need a SIGN as much as you need a something printed REALLY BIG. Or modestly-sized, but, you know, custom-cut and mounted on steel. This happens to everyone. That’s why everyone goes to Sign & Image Factory. Continue Reading

John Lewis’ Mechanical Antiques & Repair

John cut his teeth on mechanical calculators, later massaging typewriters and printers. Thing is, he still charges like $125 is a month’s rent. Call ahead for typewriter museum hours (or to beg for to be let in), and avoid border politics with Darlene. Unless, of course, your argument is solid as the forty minutes you’re prepared to spend at the counter. Continue Reading

Guerrilla Graphix

Just relocated from their spot on Silver, Travis still runs the sweetest little shop for that custom tee or propaganda for the incombent revolution. Sprouted with good intentions and always willing to promote the local, this alternative apparel shop is fun and pushes the bounds of acceptable.

Sandia Paper

The best local alternative to Xpedex. Their selection is wide, prices standard or better, and a mere $4 delivery fee. Not enough? Cheapest accurate cutting in town. Expect bangup service, from sales staff to the guys pulling your paper. Adam’s been using them exclusively for years; quite a bit of the 2009 Guide was printed on Sandia-supplied stock.

Sometimes you need something etched. If you’re like us, you need these things surprisingly often. In addition to cheap and courteous service, in the realm of custom rubber stamps, embossers and vinyl, they can accommodate just about anything. Get your custom stamp design in before noon and pick it up same day after 4:00. Yeah, it’s like that.

JB Graphics

John B. has been screen printing since before you were born; he’s singularly responsible for half the posters, t-shirts and memorabilia of the early Caribbean Reggae scene. (Dude knew Lee “Scratch” Perry. C’mon.) Of course, more importantly, he printed the last two years of Guide t-shirts. Continue Reading

Factory Express

For the production equipment enthusiast, the notion of such a supply shop in town is hard to swallow. But there it is, brimming with ream-cutters, keypad-locking safes, die-cutting machines, embossers, corner-rounders, hole-punchers and more. Still better is their friendly, knowledgeable and resourceful sales and repair staff. On-site repairs for a premium.
