Essence Spa & Nails
Posted on March 27, 2012
If you’ve ever had your nails done before, it was probably in a shop like Essence: mostly Vietnamese ladies massaging feet and hands, painting on lacquer and waxing off hair in a back room. Essence is cleaner than many and slightly pricier than some. But what really sets it apart is the kiddie chairs. Continue Reading

The Back Porch Day Spa
Posted on March 7, 2012
Whereas Betty’s is like a zen monastery of minimalism, the Back Porch is more like an escape to the country estate of your Great Aunt Ethel. It’s comfortable, dark, quiet, full of old books and Victorian knick-knacks, and they ply you with tea and cookies. Continue Reading

Betty’s is Albuquerque’s answer to 10,000 Waves, with lower-priced options for that Spa Day you and your loved ones deserve. Andrew Scott has been cutting hair for 30 years. You won’t believe that when you meet him, though — his young spirit definitely belies his wisdom and experience. Casa Verde Salon and Spa
Posted on March 9, 2011
Casa Verde is no exception to the Aveda upscale. All-natural hair, make-up, and spa products coupled with friendly, knowledgeable, and fun specialists make it worth the trip. True, a cut and color may run top-dollar, but their stylists are proof of worth. Also, you won’t ever have a problem with foot fungus after a mani-pedi. Special bonus: one of the few Aveda salons in town not of the Mark Pardo conglomerate.

Everyone‘s barber shop, from skaters to noggin-nodders to lawyers. A sweet set of turntables by the door, invariably spinning something dope; hip, modestly-priced art on the walls; and of course, a staff of very capable, very friendly barbers. They’ll get you a cup of water, maybe the latest issue of Wax Poetics while you wait. Continue Reading
